Dr. McDowell originally came to WCU in 2008 when the Nurse Anesthesia program was in its infancy. After 6 years he resigned from his academic and clinical employment, sold most of his belongings and moved to Chad, Africa with his wife and young daughters to serve at a small mission hospital where he provided anesthesia coverage 24/7 and trained local nurses how to give basic, but safe anesthesia; all in French! Dr. McDowell returned to WCU in 2018 as a part-time faculty member and now works clinically with Advent Health Hendersonville.
Prior to joining WCU, Dr. McDowell worked as a clinical CRNA in Asheville, NC at Mission Hospitals with an emphasis in anesthesia for Vascular Surgery and once upon a time he began clinical practice working at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. He also served as an officer in the United States Navy after completing his undergraduate studies.
When he’s not working, you can find Dr. McDowell building or fixing something on his 18 acre slice of heaven or traveling to provide anesthesia care internationally.
