Ian Hewer completed his anesthesia training in 1995 at the University of California, San Francisco. During his career, he has worked at both tertiary medical centers and small community hospitals, providing anesthesia care to a diverse surgical population- including pediatrics, obstetrics, neurosurgical and cardiac patients. He became Assistant Director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program in 2014 having been employed part-time as Assistant Professor since 2011. He maintains his clinical practice at Mission Hospital, in Asheville, North Carolina.

He has extensive clinical teaching experience both as a preceptor and clinical coordinator, working with graduate students from the University of Kansas, Duke University, and WCU. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina Charlotte in 2018.

He is a Fellow of the AANA Journal Writing Fellowship Program Writing for Scientific Publication, & has coauthored publications in the AANA Journal, the International Journal of Nursing Research, & the Social Science journal. Mr. Hewer is a member of American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, North Carolina Association of Nurse Anesthetists, International Anesthesia Research Society, & Academy Health. He is currently a member of the Government Relations Committee for the North Carolina Association of Nurse Anesthetists, & in the past has served on the Publications Committee of the Kansas Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and as student representative for the Board of the California Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Mr. Hewer is married with two children, and lives in Fairview, North Carolina. Outside of anesthesia, his interests include soccer, biking and music.
